School Observations
The tour of my schools allowed for me to observe many things that otherwise I would not know. One of the major things the trip focused on was the architecture. The oldest buildings are at the top of the hill and they get younger near the bottom. Most buildings have been repurposed over the years which explains the reason for the awkward designs of some classrooms. The original school was separated with a girls part and guys part, but sense have become mixed. Two separate architects designed the parts of the school and it can be seen in the designs on the outside of the buildings. One architect put more details on the outside of the building;dings while the other made them more plain. Through this trip I learned that their was a great history behind each building, much more then I originally thought.
Mokauea
Mokauea is a island off are auhupaʻa of Kapālama. It is a small fishing island with people who live on it and take care of the island. The island went under dramatic changes in the early parts of the 20th century with the ocean around the island being dredged. This caused destruction to the reef around the island and changed topography of the ocean bed. The government even burnt down Hawaiian buildings on the island in the later parts of the 19th century causing a stir in the Hawaiian community. Now the island is under their control and is being taken care of by Hawaiians.
